Naming a wine brand

Project background

A newly-established winery in Slovenia needed a compelling brand name for itself and for its top- and second-tier wines. In a crowded marketplace they want to stand out as the modern, premium-quality choice for a younger crowd with discerning tastes – the wines involved are priced at €18-25.

Creative process

Working with the founder we identified four core values at the new brand’s heart: Quality, Sustainability, Science & Diversity.

From there, four camps for potential names were distilled, combining the core values with the geographical location of the winery.

The chosen camp – Where the Mountains Meet the Sea – grounded the brand and also referenced the diversity, sustainability and science-lead approach.

Next, four names were created, each an example of a specific approach: literal, portmanteau, geographical and cultural. This enables further refinement in approach and lead to the final round of name creation which the client immediately adopted for full brand development & design.

Final results

The creation of an interlinked set of three names: one for the brand itself, one for the top-tier wine and another for the second tier wine. Each contained within it references to the core proposition and was, of course, unique – not just within the wine space but also any adjoining or related business areas.
